Why a DIY Costume is a Winner

This Halloween has been one for the books! I had kids come to my house to Trick or Treat, I got to bring my dog to work, and I was a WINNER in our office Halloween Costume Contest!  After skipping a costume the past few Halloweens, I was anxious when we decided to have a costume contest at work this year.  Halloween isn’t exactly my favorite holiday.  Don’t get me wrong, I’m a candy fanatic! I’m just not crazy about breaking the bank on a costume that will probably only be worn once.

This year I was able to have my candy and eat it too! I collaborated with Lizzie from Live Fabuliz and Allison from Because I Said So, and we completely killed it without maxing out our credit cards.  We went as the Trio of Trolls and it was definitely something magical.

Whether you’re trying to save or wanting to stand out, here’s some reasons to try a DIY costume:

Money Talks

Your costume can make a statement for less than you think. With Pinterest and a creative mind, a costume can be created on any budget.  The most expensive part of our costume was the colored hair spray!  It was nice to feel guilt-free costume shopping this year.

Comfort is Key

When you’re creating your own costume you can find pieces that not only fit well but feel comfortable.  I find that most costumes found in Halloween shops aren’t made from the greatest fabric.  If you’re spending all day in your costume, you’ll want to feel content.  Rocking a big t-shirt and leggings at work today was great.

Innovation Excites

Our same costume could have created several different looks.  We chose trolls this time, but our costumes could definitely be recycled in future years.  Some other ideas that could have worked with my costume were Joy from Inside Out, Marge from The Simpsons, or even a Smurf!  What won our judges over was our hairstyles and makeup, which was all the product of our imagination!

*Pro Tip: Get a group together for your costume! You won’t regret sharing the spotlight for a Halloween party or costume contest.  As Allison said, there is definitely strength in numbers!

Being a winner in our office costume contest was the highlight of my day.  And the prize of a FREE paid day off isn’t too bad either!  Halloween has officially come and gone, so it’s time to get back to reality.  On the bright side, there’s still some left over candy to get me through the rest of the week!

While reading this, I thought this is so me! First of all, congrats on the win! Second of all, I agree about not wanting to spend so much money on a costume you will only wear once. I love people that are creative with their costumes. I wrote a post all about it too! Thanks for sharing.

You all are threee cute (pun intended)! I agree store-bought costumes can be so uncomfortable so I always try to pull from my closet when creating my costumes. Also, congrats on the paid day off!

I couldn’t agree more with all the points you made in this! The material of the pre-made costumes are terrible and so itchy at times! I’m definitely going to opt for a DIY one next year!
